The tools allow Swipely’s 350 merchants in Boston, San Francisco and New York to target their customers with deals based on recent purchase interactions with their small businesses. Merchants can, for instance, send a “we miss you” offer to customers who haven’t made purchases within a certain time period or a “thank you note” offer to those who have visited recently.

“How far can Directory go? Overseas is the place to look. Quietly, Next has launched web operations in 48 countries, including the US, Germany, Australia and Russia, and another 15 countries will be added this year, including China. The clothes are still dispatched to customers from distribution centres in the UK, which sounds a hellishly expensive way to sell to shoppers in Sydney or St Petersburg but is apparently cheaper than dispatching goods in bulk to a local depot. Chief executive Lord Wolfson says Directory Overseas will achieve profit margins of 20% this year.”

But if you get to a point where you look at it and you say look, “we are continuing invest a lot of money in this, and it’s not working and we have a bunch of other good businesses,” and this is a hypothetical scenario, and “we are going to give up on this.” On the day you decide to give up on it, what happens? Retailers are increasingly mining vast troves of digital information to improve the decisions they make about pricing, shelf-stocking and product offerings. “This huge and growing ecosystem of data is an asset that some retailers are really beginning to exploit for competitive advantage,” said Thomas H. Davenport, a professor of information technology and management at Babson College. “It brings more science into the business. Relying on gut feel is yesterday’s strategy in retailing.”
Mountains of data and whiz-bang technology are no cure for tight-fisted shoppers, of course. And this was a challenging holiday season for most retailers. Even computing enthusiasts acknowledge that the technology is far better at fine-tuning decisions on pricing, product assortments and shipments than the basic merchandising judgments about what goods to make and buy from suppliers.
